A Room at the Merrill Hotel
Well, here it is! Finally, the completed version of "A Room at the Merrill Hotel". I had originally done this piece in a more minimalistic fashion (see post from last year), and it was decided that it would look better if it was more 'stuffed'.
So... voila! It's definitely stuffed. There are lots of things going on in this one- a poker game, postcard writing, smoking, drinking, reminiscing over lost loves and some jail time.... definitely some violent overtones with the gun front and centre. Notice the Trojans tin on the left side! I HAD to buy that tin, even if it was $30- for a shadowbox, that is a very expensive addition, but it definitely sets a tone and was worth every penny. There's one lady's earring, too. Looks like there was a lot of fun going on in this room. Everything is dated from the late 1940's - late 1950's. I have no idea how old the gun is, but it is real.
I really hope that the owner likes this new version. I'll have the glass cut and the frame fitted later this week.
Dimensions: BIG. It is over 54" long and roughly 7" thick and somewhere around 28" tall. And heavy as all get-out, as the background is the actual top of a wooden dresser I hacked up. This is definitely the biggest, most elaborate box I've ever done.
