Oh, boy! I got to go to Toronto for the last weekend of the summer! This time, my oldest boy Monty and I checked out Chinatown and Kensington Market. You never know where inspiration will come from. These bejewelled critters were in a window display and I thought they created an interesting scene. There are days I feel all bright and sparkly, filled with ideas and brimming with plans to create. And then there are days when I wonder what it is I was trying to say. I had a great conversation with a friend on the weekend about his upcoming exhibition. He was telling me all about the concept, and how he arrived at it, and what he was doing in his studio, and it was all so engrossing and serious, and I was nodding and taking it all in, and then he said "and then I thought it was a load of crap so I threw it all out."
I love talking with fellow artists. It makes me feel that I am not alone in my trials and tribulations and self-censorship.
This picture of sparkly animals in the window reminded me of a gallery opening, where artists are all lit up and talking to each other about ideas and inspiration.

I have been working VERY slowly on a series of shadowboxes that are my versions of Catholic Saints. I injured my hand back in May and have been progressing at a snail's pace. I can't wait until I am back in the saddle again.
So far, I have 4 Barbies that have been altered into my versions of actual saints St. Margaret the Barefooted, Our Lady of Perpetual Light, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and St. Catherine the Astonishing. I am working on St. Successa right now. My goal is to have 8-10 shadowboxes. I guess I am still playing with dolls after all!
The Saints will be part of my 2011 show at ARTspace, hopefully in the late Spring.
